Turquoise and blue topaz are the birthstones for December. Turquoise is also the 11th wedding anniversary stone. Zodiac sign: Sagittarius (23 Nov - 22 Dec) & Capricorn (23 Dec - 19 Jan).
Turquoise takes its name from the time when Levantine traders imported the stone into Europe, with ‘turquoise’ meaning Turkish. The colour of turquoise can vary from green to sky blue, with or without matrix (black lines running through the stone). Turquoise was favoured by ancient Egyptians from approx. 3000 BC.
According to gem lore, turquoise is believed to relieve depression and enhance confidence. If given as a gift, turquoise is considered a sign of friendship.
