TURQUOISE - December
Wearing the birthstone associated with your date of birth is thought to bring good luck and protection. In modern times, birthstone jewellery is a popular keepsake gift for special occasions.
Turquoise is the primary birthstone for December; the others being blue topaz, tanzanite and blue zircon (please see menu of the left). It is also the 6th and 11th wedding anniversary stone. Zodiac sign: Sagittarius (23 Nov - 22 Dec) & Capricorn (23 Dec - 19 Jan).
Turquoise takes its name from the time when Levantine traders imported the stone into Europe, with ‘turquoise’ meaning
Turkish. The colour of turquoise can vary from green to sky blue, with or without matrix (black lines running through the stone), with sky blue being the most valued variety. Turquoise is an ancient gemstone. It was particularly favoured by ancient Egyptians from approx. 3000 BC. Ancient Persians believed that if you wore turquoise on your fingers, you would avoid poverty. Turquoise is also considered a sacred gemstone by North American Indians, connecting the sea and the sky.
According to gem lore, turquoise is believed to relieve depression and enhance confidence. If given as a gift, turquoise is considered a sign of friendship.
